Description

INSPIRATION

Huge thanks to the author of this YouTube video, Atlas Pro, who inspired the setting of this board game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgGoW5AIKEY

TLTR (or Too Long To Watch the 30' video):

About three-quarters of the stars in our galaxy are red dwarfs, small and dim stars that emit radiation at the edge of the visible spectrum, near the red color. The video discusses the hypothesis of an Earth-like exoplanet, habitable, but orbiting a star much smaller than the sun. In essence, such a planet would have one face always exposed to light and one completely dark: life would be possible only along the sunset line, also called the terminator. Closing the parenthesis, plants would have red leaves to capture as much light as possible in a stable way.

The idea for arcologies came from the video game SimCity 2000 (for good old MS-DOS). Why they look like Mesopotamian ziggurats instead, perhaps it's a sort of middle ground between that grandiose Tokyo port project and the polygonal nature of the board.

GAME OVERVIEW

DIMRIM is a cooperative game in which players must build a series of Arcologies (huge, self-sustaining buildings) to stop the advance of the City (an impending ecumenopolis) and the deserts before the red forest is wiped out or the pollution becomes excessive.

In short, the game sees the clash between the two factions of the Arcologists (the players) and the Urbanizers (the game itself). Each turn, each player first takes the place of the opposing faction and then takes that of their own, choosing only one move.

ASSEMBLING (caveat before printing)

In order to play three-dimensionally, you'll need 104 6x2mm neodymium magnets (up to 122 if you'll print all plates). If that amount scares you, I have to say that last month I placed an order of about €20 for a thousand magnets on A***xpress; 3d printing teaches you to be patient even with long shipments.

Otherwise, the bambu store has the same magnets and they are much faster.

From experience I can say that the magnets you will receive will never be 6x2mm, but a little smaller. This is absolutely not a problem, on the contrary it is an advantage in this case: the magnets will enter their slots smooth as silk.

Thirty-one of these will be glued onto the planet/board, always maintaining the same orientation: i suggest you to keep one magnet as a reference (on an old print or a metallic surface) and follow the "PLUS" symbols engraved.

The first planet I printed fit the magnets perfectly. The second one required a small hammer to gently press the magnets into the A and B layers. Since there was no change in diameter, I guess my filament wasn't dry enough.

All other magnets can be embedded during the printing process (in order to avoid glue everywhere). Follow here the "PLUS" symbol too, with the same reference as the planet/board.

You'll find what parts need magnets reading the Player's guide or the section below.

Final considerations

This game is a draft, since Makerworld contests last about a month. I've made more complex games, but fine calibrations usually take months.

Anyone lucky enough to see and be convinced to print this board game is free to make any kind of considerations and to write to me privately.

Thanks to anyone who would ever want to print and try it.
And thanks to the friends who helped create the game logic in just two weeks.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Fun fact: all the terrain in this game comes from the hills of Tuscany!

Tip: I was suggested to print a pin so the planet could rotate, but a turntable (a lazy susan) will do the job just fine. Nonetheless, in all tests I turned the planet with hands.

Save planet Dimrim (and maybe Earth too)!

If you've read this far, please consider liking/subscribing/boosting. It means a lot to me and will push me to create better content.

Have a nice print!

And now let's imagine hexagonal pine nuts…
