Description

The hammer crashes down, splitting the stone beneath the rogue’s feet. Dust rises. The party freezes.
This one isn’t shambling. It’s planted—set in place like it’s been standing here for centuries. There's no growl, no lunge. Just a creaking shift of weight and a low groan of rusted armor as it lifts the hammer again.
Not in anger. Just following the last order it was ever given.
That next step your players take? That’s the point of no return.

This skeleton isn’t your average sword-waving minion. Based on Monster Manual lore, this type of undead was likely placed intentionally—either by a necromancer, a forgotten temple, or just lingering magic where death was stronger than time.
Unlike zombies, skeletons retain combat training. They know how to guard, how to wait, and how to strike when it counts.
This medium-sized, armored sentinel carries a massive stone hammer,
making it perfect for:
Tomb entrances and ancient vaults
Brute force trials in forgotten temples
Dwarven ruins, where enchanted tools became weapons
False treasure rooms—the loot is bait, the skeleton is the trap
Bonus idea:
Skeletons don’t breathe, which means it could be lurking:
Underwater in a flooded tunnel, still and silent
Sealed behind a false wall or sarcophagus, waiting
Buried in rubble, triggered by tremor or noise
You don’t need to homebrew a reason. The lore already makes it work.
Just place it. Let the tension build.

Arcana
- (10+) Standard necromancy—likely raised long ago, not recently summoned
- (13+) The hammer has faint enchantment residue. Not magical anymore, but it was
- (16+) You detect layered necromancy—this skeleton was reanimated more than once. Maybe by different casters.
- (20+) There’s a remote trigger bound to its presence. Defeating it might unlock something—or awaken something else.
Investigation
- (12+) You spot engraved runes on the hammer’s head. Worn down. Not decorative—functional glyphs
- (15+) The bones are older than the armor. Someone re-equipped this thing long after it died
- (17+) Its stance is symmetrical, almost ceremonial. This wasn’t just a soldier—it might’ve been a guardian from a temple or elite unit
Insight
- (6+) It doesn’t flinch. It doesn’t react to threats. It’s holding a position
- (14+) When you reach for a certain item, its posture tenses. It’s not guarding the room—it’s guarding that
