Kumiko woodworking is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique involving intricate patterns and designs using thin pieces of wood that are carefully cut, fitted, and joined together without using nails or glue. The method is most commonly used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. The term “Kumiko” refers to the small wooden pieces used in the technique.
This dovetail sliding box lid was hand-designed in Fusion 360. I took great care in designing the pattern for the lid to get all the angles and lengths precisely right. I now have two versions of this box:
- Original, measures: 150x75x50 mm (LxWxH) with 4 mm thick walls.
- Medium, measures: 165x160x50 mm (LxWxH) with 4 mm thick walls. Designed by request.
- Large, measures: 230x230x120 mm (LxWxH) with 4 mm thick walls. Designed by request.
The box in the pictures was printed with Creality Wood PLA - White Pine.
[Edits]:
3-28-2025 - added the Large version of the box.
4-24-2025 - added the Medium version of the box.
