Shou Xing
Also known as the South Pole Star, it is the name of a star and the god of longevity in ancient mythology. It is also a deity in Taoism. Originally the name of a star, it is one of the three stars of Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity. After Qin Shi Huang unified the country, he built a Shou Xing temple in Duxian near Chang'an. Later, Shou Xing evolved into the name of an immortal. The Ming Dynasty novel Journey to the West describes Shou Xing as "holding a spiritual herb," with a long head, large ears, and short body. The novel Jing Shi Tong Yan has a mythological story of "the three stars of Happiness, Prosperity, and Longevity saving the world." In portraits, Shou Xing is depicted as an old man with a white beard, holding a staff, with a prominent forehead. In ancient times, he was a symbol of longevity for the elderly. He is often depicted with deer, cranes, and fairy peaches, symbolizing longevity.
