Description

Beware this is a large project! 

~63h print time and ~1320g of filament, and lot's of extra hours prepping, cleaning and installing!

 

Note: These are also large gcode files. I had issues with sending the files over the wifi, so if that gives errors, save the gcode files directly on a micro SD on your PC and then manually putting that in your printer.

The Tree Branch Bookshelf Bracket

Apart from the time it took, it has been a blast of a project!
It began with an idea of making a fun and cozy, aesthetically pleasing bookshelf for our kids room. With the use of the MakerLab Image-to-3D print I was able to start working on this project and make it happen. 

 

It took me several weeks to get the design finished. I had to split and merge and split parts of the model again to get it optimal for printing with the least amount of support. It became clear early on that these branch brackets wouldn't be sufficient to hold the shelf up by itself. So these are designed to fit around the IKEA - SANDSHULT brackets. 

 

The reason the branches are numbered 3, 4 and 5 is because number 1 and 2 didn't fit and weren't aesthetically pleasing enough. 

 

Designer's note:

I've split all the tree branches over three print profiles so that all the parts are separated per branch to prevent mix-up. 

Within these profiles I've separated the parts over different build plates to make sure that the prints are optimally positioned. Meaning that I've found that with many thin and tall parts the printer is prone to knock one or two over. By separating these over different build plates the chance of that happening decreases significantly as the print head doesn't move between parts. 

 

You would still need wall plugs and screws to attach the IKEA brackets to the wall. Please make use of the recommendations by IKEA themselves. 

 

I used an Oak shelf/board which is about 195mm deep, 1800mm long and 19mm thick. These branches can be used for a shelf up to 200mm deep. Anything more and there will be gaps in between parts. 

 

The branches are designed in such a way that they can be installed on existing, already mounted brackets! 
Once glued on the bracket, the brackets and the shelf can be removed as well. Just not the printed parts from the brackets. 


Filament I used:

  • Polymaker PolyTerra PLA - Earth Bown
  • Polymaker Polyterra PLA - Charcoal Black

Assembly Instructions

Supplies needed:

  • Wall plugs & Screws
  • Screws to attach the shelf to the IKEA brackets
  • Glue (Hot Glue and/or Super Glue Gel)
  • +1350g of filament
  • At least 61 hours of print time. 

Install the SANDSHULT brackets and the shelf first!

Once these are installed the branches can be mounted. 

The animated assembly (GIF) of the branches can be found enlarged in the images above. 

Branch 3

  1. Follow the numbers in order for installation. Use glue to bind the parts together.
  2. Look at the GIF to see the order if the image is unclear.  
  3. (Optional) glue the last piece on top of the shelf to make it look like the branch protrudes through the shelf. 

Branch 4

  1. Follow the numbers in order for installation. Use glue to bind the parts together.
  2. Look at the GIF to see the order if the image is unclear.  
  3. (Optional) glue the last three piece on top of the shelf to make it look like the branch protrudes through the shelf.

Branch 5

  1. Follow the numbers in order for installation. Use glue to bind the parts together.
  2. Look at the GIF to see the order if the image is unclear.
