Description

Print the boxes, ports, and crossover boards for the outstanding XMechanik Mechano-23 speakers. Details on the overall construction are found here and their measurements are available on both ASR and on Spinorama. The sound quality you can get out of $~300 is incredible.

A few notes on printing:

  • If you use the xover boards, make sure to print with no top/bottom walls.  The infill acts like a “perf board” to let you put the component wires through and do point-to-point soldering.  PETG and PLA should work fine
  • For the main box, it's setup to print 2 halves with the driver holes up.  I did this in PETG having tested the resonance properties of a few materials.  This worked a lot better than slicing horizontally and stacking 4-8 pieces.
  • Note the triangular ridges in each part of the box. They're there to stiffen the walls . They're triangular to let you avoid needing supports on them. The 29 degree support angle and painting of them was chosen for this.
  • A few people have altered the tuning of the box (see the construction thread noted above). The recess in the rear is setup to let you run a range of different port widths and lengths so you can tune it as you like. If you have no idea what this means, just print the supplied sizes.
  • This is setup with PETG for the ports. I've done both PETG and TPU to give a bit of dampening.
  • You'll need 2 of the first two plates, but one of the others (duh).
  • Small holes in the back are for the binding posts. I used the Dayton Audio BPA-38G HD
  • It's really handy to have an AMS and 2 spools loaded up. As-designed even the smaller box top takes just over 1 kg. You could tweak the infill a touch to bring that down but the larger half is 1.3 kg.  This is a long print.  The larger half is ~2 days and the smaller is ~1.6 days and over 4 kg using PETG
