Description

This is an  attempt to make the lyre a little larger.  I was able to create this with  12 strings which increased  the playing range of the instrument. It has been tuned to the key of C and attached below is a video demonstrating some of its possibilities.  The tuning pins fit snugly and hold tune without slipping , I used 5 walls and cut back to 20% infill in this profile and this worked fine. I printed with Bambu Basic PLA and was pleased with the outcome.  Tuning pins were purchased on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09181ZGJ4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1, strings cans be purchased there as well but I am fortunate to be married to a Harpist who was willing to share some of her leftovers. This Lyre was given time for the strings to adjust, therefore it plays and holds tune better than the video of my first attempt.   Over all it has been a fun project that  actually produces music,  I am pleased with the final results.

I really love this. Would there be a way to get the strings to resonate longer? Perhaps different strings? I see some lyre harp strings that are metal on Amazon, but as I have no experience with harps or lyres I'm not certain if this would help or if it would require too much tension for a 3D printed lyre.

metal strings have a higher tension, usually, so I'm not certain that the body would hold for a long time, fully tuned. The thing that would make a lyre resonate is, frankly, them material used, ie wood vs. plastics. I have owed a professional model Carbon Fiber and the best strings available don't resonate as well as a mediocre string on a wood harp. The best you could maybe do is consider trying to modify it and adding a bridge at the bottom and see if making it more shallow or maybe deeper might alter the sound production, but that is only a guess.

You could glue a piezo to the back and add a jack for electric. You could then use an amplifier for sustain and volume.

I think I would prefer nylon strings. However, I'm not certain which sizes to get—possibly just some that are labeled as lyre or lyre harp strings?
