This is a pre-filter for an aquarium pump. I designed it to reduce the frequency of cleaning the pump itself. The pre-filter is constructed so that the component holding the sponges can be easily unscrewed and removed laterally.

I recommend printing with PETG.

The pre-filter simply slides onto the pipe from which the pump draws water. The fitting section has an inner diameter of 13 mm or 0.5 inches.

I use this pre-filter on two filters:

1. Eden 94087 FET 100. Note: This is apparently almost identical to the Oase Filtrosmart 100

2. Aquael Mini Pat Filter

Naturally, the pre-filter works with virtually any filter, provided it fits the intake pipe. For intake pipes with an outer diameter of 13 mm or 0.5 inches, no modifications are necessary. Other diameters may only require a simple adapter.

Individual components:

  1. Extension. This is optional and not strictly required.
  2. Connecting angle
  3. Connector
  4. Connector
  5. Inner tube
  6. Internal filter basket. This is optional and not strictly required.
  7. Sponges. These must be sourced separately. Width and height 5 cm or 2 inches.

At a minimum, components 2, 3, 4, and 5 are needed. Parts 2 and 3 are inserted into each other; a small detent prevents twisting. Part 3 is screwed onto part 4, and part 5 is inserted into part 4.

Part 1 is optional. The extension can be printed multiple times and joined together. I used it to attach the pre-filter to an Aquael Pat mini filter, positioning the pre-filter as low as possible in the tank to conceal it behind plants.

Part 5 is optional. The housing might obscure the color of the sponges if you dislike their appearance. It also provides a convenient grip for unscrewing the pre-filter.

Note: The print profile includes four housing plates. I only printed the one with holes. I recommend the lying version. The others might not print well, but they may work and appeal to someone.

Note: I printed the housing lying down because it tore off the print bed twice during upright printing. However, this can undoubtedly be improved.
