This might be my favorite one yet, and perhaps the most challenging.

Meet part 6 of my “Boys Day Fossil Hunting" Series: The Raven

(If you are new here, my 4 year old son and I have come up with a game where I 3d print “fossils” and bury them in the woods for him to find. It has made daddy look SUPER cool.)

Bird skulls are inherently difficult to print because of all of the internal geometry of the skull and all of the fine detail. If you flip this over and compare it to an actual raven skull - you will see that the print isn't 100% “accurate” - but it is necessary to design in this way to make it print well.

Question - do you like the lower jaw (beak) attached to the model? Or do you prefer the models where they are separate? I am working on a click in hinge mechanism so that my son can make the fossils “talk” - but it isn't quite finished yet.

What do you think? What could I do to these models to make them more fun for you and your kids?

Printed in Bambu Matte PLA in Desert Tan. If you can spare the time - slow down the first layer significantly, increase the wall count to 5, and set the support interface distance to 0.2mm (top and bottom). This does print with supports (tree organic - build plate only) but they came off in about 5 minutes.

All of this is for him anyway :)
