Description

Rock ptarmigan call (beta v.0.2)

Rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta, fjällripa, fjellrype) live in harsh conditions in mountain areas in a big part of the northern world. They respond good to calls, mostly just answers and therefore can be easy located or they can even come if the conditions is right. The call is a bit hard to imitate and this call is a Work In Progress, its not perfect yet. But even this version of the call has been successfully used during hunting this season. Its not that loud so its best used during days with calm conditions.

As with all my calls, the printed reed is only a template, use it to cut a better one from some other plastics. I have used the plastic lid from some food containers:

Printing

Use PLA or another stiff material (avoid CF/GF since you are going to breath in around it, you do not want small CF particles in your lungs). All parts are designed for 3d-printing and no supports needed. I suggest using 0.4 mm or finer nozzle and most layer heights should be ok (0.2 in the uploaded print profile).

Assembling

Exhaust (most to the right) is screwed into the sound board (middle). The reed (that should be cut out of other plastic) is put with help of the wedge (top) into the sound board. And the barrel (left) is just press fitted over the sound board as well. The little plate with the picture of the ptarmigan can be glued onto the barrel.

Sound

To use it, you whistle by blowing and at the same time using your hand as a cup in front of it to adjust the frequency and volume. Below is a rock ptarmigan call. If you google it, many videos is wrong and mix up with willow ptarmigan that have a very different sound.
