Description

I made a gridfinity for my harbor freight ICON 3/8 Drive socket set. This file is for the METRIC set. Works for both the shallow and the deep sockets. Printed in 2 colors for better recognition of sockets compared to the foam. Although I do like Kaizen foam, it takes up a lot of space compared to the 3D print (29% size reduction). Every sq inch in my tool box counts when it comes to the gridfinity system. It gives you back 12 gridfinity squares, which is a lot of space.

I put these 3mm x 10mm x 60mm rectangular magnets in the base to retain the sockets. They are strong enough for me to shake (lightly) the tray upside down and the sockets do not fall out. If you want to make it perfect, you will need to grind down about an 1/8" off the length of one of the magnets so that it is flush with the tray.

If you like it, give me a boost. Thanks!

very good print but will ONLY FIT the sockets he spec'd....tried my pittsburg and my 13mm wouldn't fit in the 13mm hole...only in the 14....so pay attention to what sockets you are using. otherwise i love this print.

Yea, I made this specifically for the ICON line of sockets. If you would like I have included the CAD files so that people can make adjustments as needed. Sadly its pretty hard to make it "universal" while saving space cause all the holes would have to be significantly oversized compared to ~.025 oversized.

it’s why it’s labeled for ICON sockets. what was wrong with the print that is marked down?

I had to modify these a bit to fit my specific parts, but the overall design worked out great. With modification, I printed parts to hold mu entire husky socket set.

could you make it taller which would allow the magnets to not have to be shaved off. also is there a way to change the size of the holes as I ha e proto sockets and they are to big. sorry I am new and do t know alot on this. I am going to play with the size and expand it taller but that won't change hole size. thanks...

Sadly I cannot make it longer so the magnets dont have to be shaven down. Gridfinity is based off a 42mm grid pattern, meaning if i wanted to make it longer id have to make it 42mm (~1 - 5/8") longer. I did upload the CAD files so they can be edited by anyone. I did specifically make this for the ICON 3/8 socket set so if you want the proto set to fit you'll have to mess around with that CAD file. I have been using just a cut off wheel, scoring around the magnet then cutting through. neodymium magnets tend to try and shatter in weird ways when they are cut but the scoring definitely helps.

This is my favorite socket holder design I've come across with the magnets and tight tolerances. It worked great on my shallow Icon sockets, but my semi-deep Icon sockets didn't fit-they were .1-.2mm too wide to fit in. Seems the semi-deep has slightly different design/tolerances than the shallow and deep sockets.

Thank you! I tried to make it as best as I could. Sorry that the semi-deeps didn't fit. I don't own the semi-deeps, but both the shallow and deep should fit in this. I did upload the Fusion 360 files, so if you wanted to, you could edit the diameters to fit your semi-deeps.

Worked great with the deep. Hopefully someday you can get a chance to make a version for the slightly larger semi-deep's.
