Background

The process of developing black and white photographs is straightforward, yet developing tanks are not inexpensive. For manual development, the tank merely serves as a light-tight container for changing solutions; I believe there's no need for extravagant expenditure, so I designed a developing tank set. Real-world testing confirms its suitability for manual film development.

Requirements

  1. The tank must be leak-proof and offer excellent sealing.
  2. The tank capacity should be minimized to conserve developer solution.
  3. The tank must be light-tight during solution changes (developer, stop bath, fixer, and water), and liquid inflow and outflow should be smooth.
  4. It must accommodate a film reel for 36 exposures of 135 film.

Design Highlights

  1. The tank's capacity accommodates only one film reel, minimizing chemical usage (future expansion to accommodate two reels simultaneously is possible by increasing tank height).

  2. The tank's screw-on section features grooves for silicone sealant. After molding with silicone, testing shows complete water-tightness. (Printed using PETG + 5 walls)

  3. The tank lid incorporates a curved channel system; using two symmetrical sets, one for venting, one for liquid input, ensures smooth liquid flow while maintaining light-tightness. (Black PETG prevents light transmission).

  4. Employing an online film reel loading method enables smooth film loading via twisting. A latch mechanism prevents film slippage during development.

  5.  A funnel is fitted via a screw-on mechanism, facilitating convenient collection of developer solution for reuse.
