Mythos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_(Mythology))
Charon ferries the dead across the river Styx to the entrance of Hades. Only those who have received the burial rites and whose passage has been paid for with a coin, the so-called "obol" (Charon's obol), are permitted onto the ferry of this incorruptible ferryman. These coins are placed under the tongues of the dead. According to the myth, Charon denied unburied dead access, so that they would have to wander around the riverbank as shadows for a hundred years until he granted them passage.[3] The mention of Erebus and Nyx as Charon's parents first appears in modern literature with Giovanni Boccaccio[4] as well as with Natale Conti[5] and lacks any ancient basis.[6]
The first mention of Charon in Greek literature is an epic poem called Minyas, a fragment preserved by Pausanias.[7]
