Roman Ballista
Print Profile(1)

Description
The ballista (from the Latin ballista, itself derived from the Greek βαλλίστρα ballistra, from βάλλω ballō "to throw" or, better, "to launch") was a large siege engine invented by the Greeks and used particularly by the Romans that launched large darts or spherical stones individually or in small groups, depending on the type of model.
The pilum was the javelin used by legionaries before close combat. Thrown at short range, its purpose was to pierce the man defending himself behind a shield. If this did not happen, it was still impossible to continue fighting with the pilum embedded, and if one tried to remove it, it would bend or break.
