Muta – The Silent Venetian Mask
Print Profile(1)

Description
A mask that speaks through silence. The Muta, or "mute mask," is one of the most enigmatic Venetian disguises. Traditionally, it was a smooth, featureless black velvet mask worn by women during the Carnival, often held in place by biting a small button inside. This design gave it a peculiar function: it forced the wearer into silence, reinforcing an air of mystery and intrigue.
Unlike the more elaborate Bauta, the Muta’s strength lies in its absence of features. It is a mask of anonymity, used historically both as a symbol of feminine discretion and as a tool of quiet defiance. Without a mouth, without words, it allowed its wearer to observe without being observed until the wearer decided to reveal herself.
Printed at 100% the pupil distance is around 61mm, scale if needed.
