Description

A 3D scanned real Iris flower - ready for 3D printing

Scanned a real world Iris with a revopoint Pop3, then repaired the scan and thickened it in meshmixer and then printed on my P1P.

Pictured prints printed in bambu PLA:  white, green, yellow & red (I didn't have any purple to match the real flower :( )

3 sizes of stem are provided - short and medium are the real world scanned stem, the long version I have extruded longer for ease of putting in a vase.

Print profiles are printed at 0.16mm layer height, using organic tree supports.  There are 2 print profiles:

  •  One with the flower and stem separate for easy multi colour - should easily press fit together but you can use a bit of superglue for extra security.  Stems are printed flat to the bed for ease of printing and strength - if you want better quality you can reorient them so they are standing up but it is a more challenging print.
  • The other print profile has the short stem version as a single piece.

Caution

Just like a real flower, this print is delicate.  Please be careful when removing the supports and ensure your printer is well set up and you have dry filament before printing

Top tip

If printing multiple to go in a bouquet - you can use a hairdryer to soften the flower and then bend and reposition the stem and flower petals to make each look slightly different

Hope people like it, and as always, any feedback welcome. Can't wait to see photos of people's prints :)

Support Issue:Central support appears to be the one that is constantly failing even at 50% speed. I have tried at least 6 variations in slicing and 2 printers, H2D and X1C with PLA and PETG. The only time I got beyond an inch or 2 was by flipping it to a different face, see pink photos. I have now given up on this model.

Other Issues:model is too thin and dainty to print well. all of my flowers ended up as spaghetti piles and aborted.

sorry to hear that could you share more detail or photo of failed print? A few people have had problems, but for me and others it works well so I just want to try and get a bit more info to see what I need to fix. are you using an A1?

Hi, and thanks for the response, I printed 4 flowers and 4 stems on the same build plate on my H2C, the first ones to spaghetti were the 2 white flowers, which I kind of understood because it seems to me that white filament has a greater tendency to de-laminate from the print bed. However further into the print, after I ignored and discarded the white flowers, the two purple flowers spaghettied as well. maybe it is the difference in the printer, I’ve recently experienced this issue of not having success because the printer is different with a different model. I apologize but I did not take pictures of the printing failures. I would estimate that they failed about a quarter of the way through the flower models. All of the stems printed successfully.

thanks for the extra details and sorry again for the failures I'll try and make an easier to print print profile as you are not the only one to have issues thanks for feedback

Very sorry to hear that :( Can you share more detail and what printer you are using? This model/print profile printed consistently for me and others but I can try and take a look if anything needs tweaking. The amount of support should be sufficient to keep part adhered to the bed - but still need good bed adhesion. Are you getting good adhesion on other models? If not I'd advise trying to give your print plate a thorough clean with dish soap and water and dry thoroughly - if that doesn't work let me know and I can upload a print profile with a bigger brim

I’m using a p1s with the textured plate. adhesion, if anything is too good. printer has 420 hours on it. prior to printing this I did a 3d scanned model of a lily. have printed numerous other models from maker world. the build plate is cleaned with alcohol before printing and shows no sign of usage.

Replying to @user_2399858968 :
thank you for sharing I'll need to have another look at this one. I suspect the lily you printed was my model? that should be the harder print, so if that worked and this one failed then I need to fix something though just as a tip - I used to only clean with alcohol as well but started to run into problems, a good clean with water and dish soap every now and then with alcohol in between prints I think is the best mix :)

It collapsed on me half way thru. Will try again --- hopefully first time was a fluke. Tried to print a 2nd time--- same thing--- middle section collapsed/broke off the supports. Much sadness as this is my favorite flower and was hoping it would print.

Do you think you would mind doing a 3D file of a scanned violet (viola odorata) flower sometime if you get the chance? If not it’s all good, though!

I am new to the 3D world and I want to make one for my mom and one for my mother-in-law, but I don't know what material to use that would be best for this model, can you please give me a suggestion
