The Saudi Riyal
The first regular currency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was issued during
the reign of the founding King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud in the year
1346 AH. This milestone marked the beginning of the Kingdom’s economic and
financial journey, paving the way for its transformation into one of the world’s
largest economies and its membership in the G20.

The Saudi Riyal Symbol
The Saudi riyal symbol represents the national currency of Saudi Arabia and
marks a strategic step toward strengthening the Kingdom’s cultural and financial
identity. It reinforces the Saudi riyal’s presence regionally and internationally,
highlighting the Kingdom’s economic role as a bridge connecting global trade.

Foundation
The adoption of the design for the Saudi riyal currency symbol,
named after the “Riyal” — the national currency first issued in 1346
AH — serves as a historical milestone. It draws on the deep-rooted
legacy of the Kingdom’s early steps in unifying its monetary system,
particularly through the issuance of currency that consolidated
financial transactions across the country.

Inspiration
The Arabic language is a treasured pillar of human civilization,
with a rich history spanning centuries and playing a key role
in the advancement of science and culture worldwide. As the
primary source of this language, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
proudly regards Arabic as its official language. In honoring
this heritage, the design of the Saudi riyal symbol is inspired
by Arabic calligraphy of the word “Riyal”, celebrating our
cultural identity rooted in the Arabic language.

The design of the Saudi riyal currency symbol
is made up of Arabic letters of the word (RIYAL)
in a font inspired by Arabic calligraphy.
