3D Model of the Eiger – A Digital Homage to an Alpine Icon
The Eiger, a majestic peak in the Bernese Alps, reigns supreme as one of the most legendary and awe-inspiring summits. Renowned for its formidable North Face, its storied mountaineering history, and its enduring presence in Alpine lore, it has captivated climbers, geologists, and nature enthusiasts for centuries. Standing tall at 3,967 meters, the Eiger embodies the exquisite beauty and formidable challenge inherent in the Swiss mountain landscape.
This meticulously crafted 3D model provides a detailed digital recreation of the Eiger, faithfully capturing the rugged texture of its rock faces, the precipitous incline of its ridges, and the intricate formations of its glaciers. The integration of high-resolution topographical data yields a strikingly realistic depiction of the mountain’s geological architecture and its celebrated climbing routes, from the perilous North Face to the Mittellegi Ridge.
Leveraging the power of QGIS, a robust open-source geographic information system, this model was meticulously constructed. The foundational data comprises the highly precise digital elevation models furnished by swisstopo, the Swiss national cartographic authority. The model specifically utilizes the swissALTI3D dataset, renowned for its exceptional accuracy in representing the Swiss terrain devoid of vegetation and human-made structures.

The process commenced with the acquisition of pertinent geospatial data via the Swiss Geo Downloader, a convenient QGIS plugin facilitating seamless access to official Swiss geodata. This data was subsequently imported into QGIS and meticulously processed to create a three-dimensional elevation model of the Eiger. Employing multidirectional hillshading and advanced visualization techniques further refined the model's texture and level of detail.
This remarkably accurate 3D model of the Eiger, born from the synergy of QGIS and official topographic data from swisstopo, offers a truly captivating digital experience, bringing the majestic presence of this Alpine icon vividly to life.
Printing Specifications
To achieve optimal detail visibility, a layer height of 0.12mm is recommended. For those prioritizing print speed, a layer height of 0.20mm provides a viable alternative with a slight reduction in detail. My model incorporates a 10% infill to impart a degree of structural integrity. This parameter can be reduced to 5%, resulting in minimal compromise to the overall detail.
Beyond the mountain itself, the model features a base inscribed with the mountain's name, primarily intended for aesthetic enhancement.

This marks my inaugural model release, and I eagerly anticipate your feedback.
A Noteworthy Observation:
From a frontal perspective, the sheer steepness of the Eiger's North Face may be understated. However, shifting your vantage point to observe the model from the left, along the ridge line, will dramatically reveal the breathtaking, precipitous nature of the North Face.
