Amsterdam in the palm of your hand!
Amsterdam was built on a dam in a swampy area, resting on peatland. The earliest buildings were initially constructed using branches and cowhides, but these structures quickly proved unstable in the peat and collapsed. To improve durability, builders began using long wooden poles imported from Poland, providing much-needed stability in the challenging peat terrain. As a result of the peat soil, the city has relatively few tall buildings.
2025 marks a special milestone as Amsterdam celebrates its 750th anniversary! Founded in 1275 and geographically centered around the Amstel River, the city has grown from a small fishing village into a world-renowned capital, famous for its canals, culture, and architecture.
