Description

This is the new, upgraded Pocket Ratchet R2 - A tool, not a toy.

No hardware required - ~1.5 hours to print - only 33g of filament (with AMS

The Pocket Ratchet is now even more durable and useful!

A new upgraded driver called 'Ratchet Core' is now available - Download it by clicking here!

What's new:

  • A better mechanism for switching the ratchet direction (switching is now smooth and snappy, requires less force).
  • The lever is snap fit, glue is not required anymore! This makes for easier maintenance and assembly.
  • Reinforced lever shaft - More surface area, optimized for FDM printing.
  • All parts have a much better fit than before, resulting in a more sturdy, reliable and durable tool.
  • Now the lever does not wiggle around freely when in the “lock” position of the ratchet.
  • A sprocket that can hold a 4mm precision bit in now available.
  • New bigger screw for easier assembly/disassembly + it is flush with the rest of the casing.
  • Changed the lever orientation for easier and more convenient switching.
  • Ratcheting action now requires less force to engage.
  • Improved sprocket design.
  • Bigger 6x3 magnets can be installed (only when using the sprocket for 6.35mm (¼") bits.)
  • Better ergonomics.
  • Optimized print profile for more strength, less waste and faster printing.

Yeah, quite a bit :p

 

Overview of the project:

I wanted to print a reversible ratcheting driver but all the designs out there were not strong enough.

So I went and designed Pocket Ratchet R1 with “It needs to be strong and just work” in mind :)
Now it's time for an even stronger and refined one!

As you saw, it passed my little stress test like it's nothing :) - It is worth to mention that the holes were not pre-drilled! The driver shown in the video is printed only using regular PLA.

On top of that, it doesn't require additional hardware (the magnet is optional, however I highly recommend installing it).

You can set the lever into three positions: screwing, unscrewing and ratchet lock.

 

Printing guide:

  • Clean your plate before printing!
  • Supports are needed on the “Top cover” part - only on the screw hole.
  • You can print it in PLA, it will work just fine (that is what I printed it out of but if you want extra strength you can use ABS/ASA, PET-CF, PA or even PPA-CF. If you do, please share the results! I'm just curious how far this new design can be pushed :p)
  • Textured PEI Plate recommended.
  • ≤0.4mm nozzle recommended.
  • If you don't have an AMS, you can select a non-AMS profile - you will still have the aesthetic features visible.

How to use:

You can change the direction of the ratchet by rotating the lever 45 degrees until you hear a click.

When not in use, please set the lever to the middle position (Lock) to avoid permanently bending the claws inside.

 

How I designed it:

As always, some iterations were needed, but I enjoyed the process :)
