Description

The “Chickadee Cabin” Birdhouse

NOW AVAILABLE FOR A1 MINI – See notes at the end of this Description

My goal was to design a birdhouse specific for Chickadees. Some important features I wanted to include:

  • Dimensions specific to Chickadee use:
    • 4" x 4" floor
    • 1.125" entrance hole
    • Entrance hole 6-7" above floor

  • Other features I wanted to incorporate:
    • Sloped roof (to shed rain)
    • Removable roof (to facilitate after-season cleaning)
    • “Friction Fit” for the roof (so no hardware would be needed)
    • Floor drains (in case any water should find its way in)
    • Air vents (to mitigate the heat of hot days)
    • Mounting tabs (to assist with hanging / attachment to various structures)
    • No supports needed to print

NOTE: while this does print in PLA on the standard textured build plate without glue, I did have some “curl up" in the corners where the drains were located. While plate adherence was not an issue (even given the height of this print) I would probably recommend glue, especially if you don't want the corners to curl. Of course, this should also print well in PETG or other filaments.

NOTE: while you can fit both the Body and the Roof on a single build plate, I'd recommend printing them separately. Given the height of the Body print, I feel it's best to keep this in the center of the build plate.

I used 10% infill as this doesn't require a lot of strength, and it cuts down on the material needed as well as the print time.

If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, or would like any customizations for other bird species, please let me know and I'll be happy to make adjustments and release another model.

**Original Model will be too tall for A1 mini

NOW AVAILABLE FOR A1 MINI

I felt bad for all the Chickadees that live in the backyards of A1 Mini owners so I developed an additional model that now prints in 3 plates (Bottom, Top, and Roof). These files are in a separate folder in the download section, along with a Bambu .3mf file if you'd just like to download a single file.

While the 3 parts are “friction fit” I would still recommend using some type of plastic cement to glue the “bottom” and “top” (middle) pieces together (leave the “roof” without cement so you can easily remove it to clean the birdhouse between seasons). Some cement will provide a little extra “insurance” to help mitigate any risk of those sections separating when there might be Chickadees in residence.

I don't own an A1 Mini, so I'd welcome any comments or recommendations for improvement, as I wasn't able to personally print this on an A1 mini. Thanks!
