The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-seat, single-engine, multirole combat aircraft of the United States Air Force, representing a pivotal achievement in third-generation or 3.5-generation fighter design.

Renowned as one of the world’s most successful fighter jets [1], the F-16’s design significantly enhanced within-visual-range combat capabilities informed by the experience of the Vietnam War. It was the first US fighter capable of 9G maneuvers and among the first to integrate fly-by-wire flight controls [15] and an ergonomically advanced cockpit. Its design incorporated energy maneuverability theory, resulting in a high thrust-to-weight ratio and low wing loading.

Beginning with the F-16A/B Block 15 series, the F-16 underwent multirole upgrades, acquiring night-fighting capabilities and the capacity to deploy air-to-ground and anti-ship missiles, solidifying its status as a versatile combat platform. Developed by General Dynamics in the 1970s, it served alongside the F-15 as a mainstay of the US Air Force throughout the 1980s and 90s. Mass production commenced in 1976, yielding nearly 4600 units sold to almost 30 countries and regions—a production exceeding the total aircraft numbers of most national air forces. Since the 1981 Battle of the Bekaa Valley, it has participated in virtually every major conflict, proving its combat effectiveness.
