Description

I recently bought an empty antique Japanese “zenibako” (銭箱) or donation box at an auction for cheap that needed restoration.  It came with this cool padlock latched to the side, but no key. I decided it would be a fun weekend project while I was restoring this antique to reverse engineer a key for it. After about 20 tries I had a key profile that would work the lock and once I had a shape that would work I researched some antique Japanese keys and added my working shape to a period correct key motif. Anyway, I was really enamored with these morel mushroom shaped keys I found in my research. I can't say it will work for other antique Japanese padlocks, but it works for mine, a lot of them use pretty similar keys so it may be a starting point for someone else. These 100-150 year old padlocks were all hand forged and finished by hand so I'm sure there are slight differences even between the same style lock from the same maker. The design was cool, so I just figured I would upload it in case someone wanted it for decoration, cosplay or whatever. Maybe this will help someone else in the future that comes across an antique padlock like this…

*This model includes a custom support. When the model is done printing just carefully grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and twist, it should snap right off easily without damaging the key profile.*
