Description

Description:
This 3D-printed tool is designed for EMS professionals to facilitate quick, clean, and precise capillary blood sampling from an IV catheter's flash chamber. Resembling a pushpin in shape, the tool features a smooth, rounded tip engineered to apply controlled pressure to the flash chamber of a retracted IV catheter, allowing a small drop of blood to be expelled directly onto a glucose test strip.

Key Features:

  • Ergonomic Design: The pushpin-style shape provides a comfortable grip, ensuring precise control while minimizing the risk of accidental spills or contamination.
  • Precision Tip: The pin-end is engineered to apply focused pressure on the flash chamber, ensuring a consistent and controlled blood droplet for accurate glucose readings.
  • Reusable & Durable: Made to withstand repeated use and disinfecting protocols, though inexpensive enough to be printed and replaced as needed.

Applications:

  • Blood Glucose Monitoring: Quickly obtain capillary blood samples from IV flash chambers for accurate glucose testing in the field.
  • Prehospital and Emergency Settings: Ideal for EMS, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals needing rapid, reliable blood sampling without the need for additional sticks.

Printing Recommendations:

  • Material: PLA or PETG for general use; ABS or other heat-resistant filaments for enhanced durability and sterilization compatibility.
  • Layer Height: 0.2 mm for smooth operation and ergonomic comfort.
  • Infill: 20-30% for optimal balance of strength and print time.

Value to EMS Professionals:
This tool improves efficiency and accuracy in glucose testing, reduces the need for additional patient sticks, and ensures a cleaner, safer workflow in fast-paced environments. Its low-cost, easy-to-produce design makes it accessible for any EMS agency looking to enhance patient care with minimal investment.

I went ahead and printed at 80% infill with PLA. I've used it about 10 times already, no issues, hasn't broken, works great.

I like the idea, but it breaks very easily. I printed one in PLA and one in PETG, same outcome. A little stronger and a larger bottom end (where your thumb goes) and it would be great.
