Description

Complete Hotend Boxes - Compact Magnetic

What is this thing?

Boxes with lids for holding your Bambulab P series Complete Hotends (not just the metal part).

A compact design with optional embedded magnets (6mmx3mm) to connect boxes together. The lids can be printed with or without identifying graphics.

Hello there:

Boost Me (for free)

Boosts are always nice if you feel I've earned them <3

What are boosts? They are free tokens that you can gift to creators you feel did a good job. Each boost gives that creator a few points that can eventually be used for certain items in the Bambulab shop. A free way for you to support us.

I don't ask or require any payment, but if you wish to help me out you can tip me via KoFi https://ko-fi.com/drsquirrel.

Or enjoy it for free! Your call :)

Important:

Each printer / nozzle / build plate / filament combination can produce different widths of the lids. Please size the width of the lid in your slicer program after doing a test print of one lid, there is a blank lid to make this process quicker. There's no way for me to predict the exact fit for your print.

Old updates below.

Brief:

A set of hotend boxes that would:

  • Be as compact as possible.
  • Protect the hotends from damage.
  • Have a closing lid.
  • Have space for the supplied screws.
  • Use minimal filament and print time.
  • Connect all boxes together neatly.
  • Allow a single box to be easily be removed from the set.
  • Identify each hotend without opening the box.
  • Allow any number of hotends in the collection with room to expand.
  • Fit in the width of a spool allowing them to fit inside one of my Book & Benchy filament storage.

I wanted to take care of my hotends that were still in their little card boxes, I searched around but didn't quite find the box I wanted.

The Print:

In the complete print profile you'll find:

  • A plate with all 5 lid designs.
    • Stainless steel 0.2 & 0.4.
    • Hardened steel 0.4, 0.6 & 0.8.
  • A plate with a blank lid if you don't have AMS or aren't interested in the designs.
  • Plates with each box:
    • Magnet both sides.
    • Magnet left side.
    • Magnet right side.
    • No magnets.
  • A plate with all 5 magnet boxes required for the 5 possible hotends; 3 middle, 1 left, 1 right.

Constructing:

The magnets, if you choose to use them, are 6mmx3mm, easily sourced online; these should be press fit and not require glue.

  1. Place your first magnet over a hole.
  2. Hold the magnet in place and flip the box over onto a hard surface.
  3. Firmly press the box down to push the magnet into place.
  4. Take another magnet and allow it to attach to the first.
  5. Slide this second magnet over to the adjacent hole without flipping the polarity.
  6. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for this magnet.
  7. Place two new magnets, one on each of the inserted ones.
  8. Place a second box aligned to the first, ensuring it's facing the same direction.
  9. Press the two boxes together, the magnets should press fit into the second box easily.
  10. Repeat steps 7 - 9 for any other magnets.
  11. You can push the magnets more snugly in with your thumb if you feel they aren't quite flush.

The box lids simply slide into place, if they are stiff at first a few times back and forth should loosen them.

If a lid becomes too tough to slide for any reason, they are thin enough to flex out of their groove without damage; so they won't get stuck.

Lid Printing:

The lids can be printed with or without the graphics. They can also be printed on a standard textured plate or an effect build plate of your choice. I chose to print them on a carbon fiber plate for the pictures. There is a separate print profile for smooth plates that may be a helpful starting place if you don't have your own settings for 3D effect build plates. I'm no expert, it's the settings I found via trial and error.

Thanks!

STL's are provided if you need them.
I'd love to see your prints if you decide to use the design. I hope you find this useful, happy printing!

Old Updates:

2025 02 17 (new) -

Updated STL for “HotEndBox Box MagLeft” to remove error in side wall. Apologies for not noticing this right away.

Updated STL for all boxes to include: A push gap in case box lid is tightly closed, to accommodate tighter lids. A slight bevel on cover insertion side, to accommodate tighter lids

Updated STL for all lids to be 101.5% wider to form a tighter fit. (Originally I fitted this for PETG print which isn't what most use, this should work with PLA better now).

Updated STL for lids with new iconography. (swapped out the Norse font because of drama, but also because it caused non manifold edge warning).

Updated V3 "Complete Project" print profile with all of the above changes.

2025 02 11 -

If you find the lid is a little loose, try printing it with a tiny increase in scale. Tolerances on different filaments and printers mean it's hard to design a sliding lid this thin that'll be perfect for everyone first time. There is a blank lid that you can use for fast/cheap test prints.

2025 02 10  -

Replaced pictures with version 2 covers with different iconography; “H” and “S” and better print quality.

Replaced Complete print profile with updated covers.

Replaced Covers Only print profile with version 2 covers plus changes to the profile to better print on a holographic plate.

2025 02 10 -

Added alternate cover STL files with different iconography; “H” and “S”.
