Description

This smart speaker project integrates modern voice assistant technology with a DIY approach, designed using Fusion 360 and manufactured with a Bambulab 3D printer.

Technical Specifications
The device is based on a SeeedStudio ReSpeaker Lite, combined with a Xiao ESP32 and an XMOS XU316 AI Sound and Audio Chipset. This enables the use of a local wake word ("OK Nabu") to activate the voice assistant, which is seamlessly integrated into Home Assistant. The architecture deliberately avoids cloud-based speech processing, ensuring privacy and user control over voice commands.

Additionally, a 2" 3W speaker is integrated into the system. The ReSpeaker features a built-in amplifier, making the speaker suitable not only for voice feedback but also for music playback. However, due to its compact size, acoustic performance is naturally limited.

Advantages and Technical Features

  • Local Speech Processing: The smart speaker operates without cloud dependency, allowing for fast response times while maintaining privacy.
  • Integrated Audio Playback: The combination of a 2" speaker and built-in amplifier enables basic music playback.
  • Compact and Functional Design: Optimized placement of control elements and a fabric-finished housing allow the device to blend seamlessly into various living environments.
  • Flexible Power Supply: The use of a USB-C port ensures modern and versatile energy supply.
  • DIY Approach: The entire device was manufactured using 3D printing technology, offering an open platform for further development and customization.

Software Implementation

A heartfelt thank you to the original creator of the software and all contributors who have made this project possible. Special thanks to formatBCE, the author of the ESPHome integration, whose dedication and expertise have been instrumental in bringing this smart speaker to life.
The smart speaker runs on a custom firmware designed to provide seamless integration with Home Assistant. The firmware is built on ESPHome, allowing easy configuration and expandability.

The GitHub repository with all necessary resources and documentation is available for those who wish to build or improve upon the project. https://github.com/formatBCE/Respeaker-Lite-ESPHome-integration
