A quick historical reference

The F100-D was extensively used by the US Air Force during the Vietnam war, and it was the first US aircraft to score an air-to-air kill (probably!) in the beginning of the conflict. Donald Kilgus (whose F100-D I tried to recreate above with my paint scheme and details) claimed to have downed a Vietnamese MiG-17 near Tahn Hoa on April 4 1965. Although it was never a confirmed kill due to lack of evidence at the time, later research and Vietnamese records suggest that this was indeed the first air-to-air victory of a US pilot in the conflict. The F100-D would soon be relegated to air-to-ground duty only.

The paint scheme depicted here is the Natural Metal Finish (unpainted), used on the F100-D in the early stages of the war. It was gradually replaced by the South East Asia camouflage.
