Description
An artificial horizon is an instrument primarily used in aviation and navigation to display a vehicle's attitude relative to the true horizon. It is among the most crucial flight and navigation instruments. It assists pilots or mariners in maintaining their orientation, especially in poor visibility or during night flights without a view of the natural horizon.

The “artificial horizon” holds particular significance for fighter jets: Especially at supersonic speeds, during extreme maneuvers, or in turbulent conditions, determining flight attitude without visual reference can be challenging. The artificial horizon helps maintain orientation, thereby preventing potential “flight path instability,” or the loss of controlled flight attitude.

This model simulates such an instrument, with a horizon maintained horizontally by gravity. It is mounted on a gimbal for movement along the longitudinal and lateral axes.
The display shows a miniature artificial image of the horizon. The white horizontal stripes, as well as the upper markings, each correspond to 10° of inclination.
