Description

You may have seen my previous version of the Astrolabe, which featured only the dragon at the base.

At the time, I mentioned that if there was enough interest, I would design a version incorporating all the animals—the stag, lion, dragon, and direwolf.

Now, after a full year since the first release, I’m excited to introduce the Game of Thrones Astrolabe featuring all four creatures.

Inspired by the iconic astrolabe seen in the opening credits of Game of Thrones, this piece captures the intricate design and rotating rings that symbolize the passage of time and history in Westeros. My goal was to bring that same sense of craftsmanship and detail to a physical model that fans can display and interact with.

Following the great feedback on the dragon astrolabe, it became clear that some improvements were needed. The original rings had a tendency to fall out when spun—an issue I hadn't initially considered, as the piece was intended primarily for display. However, seeing how impressive it looks in motion, I spent the past year researching the best way to resolve this.

After testing multiple prototypes with different hardware, I ultimately decided on self-tapping screws, which provide a secure hold while keeping costs low. These screws are available from Bambu Lab Makers Supply in packs of 20, with the astrolabe requiring 10—enough for two models. As shown in my video, this method allows the rings to spin even better than if I had used bearings.

For printing, note that the base requires supports, which should be removed carefully due to the intricate details, especially around the stag’s antlers and legs. I recommend using support filament or printing with PETG if using PLA.

I’m thrilled to finally bring this upgraded version to you and can’t wait to see your prints!
