Description:
This remix is an adaptation of the RackMod 1U: Blank Model originally created by Talving , part of the RackMod 1U modular server rack project. What’s New?
This tray is specifically designed to hold a 3.5" hard drive that’s been "shucked" from a Western Digital Elements USB hard drive. It uses the rubber drive insulators included with the original drive but requires trimming their height to ensure the HDD fits snugly within the 1U tray size.
Features:
- Compatibility with 3.5" Western Digital shucked drives.
- Integration with the existing RackMod 1U modular server rack.
- Secure HDD mounting using the USB drive controller (original drive board).
- Uses three M3 screws to secure the drive to the tray.
Assembly Instructions:
- Trim the rubber vibration isolators from the Western Digital drive to fit the 1U height. Use a sharp knife for precise cuts.
- Place the hard drive on the tray, aligning it with the pre-designed slots for stability.
- Secure the drive using the three M3 screws, ensuring a firm fit while maintaining vibration damping via the isolators.
Design Considerations:
- This design was optimized for ease of assembly and uses accessible tools for modification (e.g., a utility knife).
- Pictures of the assembly process are included for clarity.
Future Updates:
The new slide out version of the RackMod is now out and I may go back and modify this to support a slide out tray version.
This remix aims to simplify the integration of shucked drives into modular server systems, providing a practical and cost-effective solution for storage expansion.
