Bul, also known as Buul, Boolik, or Puluc, is a running-fight board game that originates from Mesoamerica. It is especially well-known among various Maya communities in Belize and the Guatemalan highlands. The exact origins of the game remain unclear—it is debated whether Bul dates back to the pre-Columbian Maya civilization or if it emerged during the post-colonial period following the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores.

Setup

  • Place the board between the two players.
  • Each player places their 6 pieces off the board, in their home area.
  • Decide which player will go first (this can be done by a simple coin toss or other method).

Dice Rolls

    • if 1 dark is thrown
    • if 2 dark is thrown
    • if 3 dark is thrown
  • 4
    • if 4 dark is thrown
  • 5
    • if 4 light is thrown

Movement

  • On your turn, toss the sticks to determine how many spaces you can move.
  • You can choose to move one of your pieces forward the number of spaces indicated by the roll.
  • A player's piece cannot land on a space occupied by one of their own pieces
  • if your piece reaches the other side of the board, it turns around and moves back toward your home area.

Capturing

  • If you land on a space occupied by an opponent's piece, that piece is captured and placed under the capturing piece.
    • you may capture any number of opponent pieces
    • you may capture an opponent's piece if it has captured one of your pieces.
  • after capturing a piece, the piece moves back toward their home area.

Returning Home

  • once a piece with a captured opponent piece, remove the opponent's piece from the game. Return your piece to your home.

Winning

  • you win the game if you capture all your opponent's pieces.
