The Aircraft

F-105G Thunderchief

Overview:
The Republic F-105G, nicknamed the "Thud," was an upgraded Wild Weasel variant designed for suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD).

Development History:
Originally a tactical bomber, the F-105 was modified for electronic warfare during the Vietnam War, carrying radar-jamming equipment and anti-radiation missiles.

Historical Significance:
The F-105G was instrumental in neutralizing North Vietnamese air defenses. It showcased the importance of SEAD missions in modern warfare.

Factoids:

  • Carried more bomb tonnage in Vietnam than the B-17 in WWII.
  • Retired in 1984.

  • Range: 2,200 miles
