Description
A janissary (new soldier') was a member of the elite infantry units that formed the Ottoman sultan's household troops. They were the first modern standing army, and perhaps the first infantry force in the world to be equipped with firearms, adopted during the reign of Murad II . The corps was established under either Orhan or Murad I, and dismantled by Mahmud II in 1826.
Janissary (New soldier) was a military class in the Ottoman Empire. There are different views on its establishment, dating back to the periods of Orhan Gazi or Murad I. With the expansion of the Ottoman Empire's borders, the Janissary Corps, which began to be formed by taking and training Christian children aged 8-18 (devşirme), constituted a large part of the infantry section of the Kapıkulu Hearths affiliated with the Sultan. The Janissary Corps, the most prestigious of the Kapıkulu Hearths, was located in the central flank where the Sultan was during battles, and the Sultan would stand on horseback behind and in the middle of them during war. During campaigns and at lodgings, Janissaries would be around the Sultan and guard him. Janissaries would protect Istanbul during peacetime.
