Maglev Cloud

This was a fun brain collab between myself and my arts & crafts -crazed brother!

The model itself is very basic and serves as a base for the wool, this is a fun lil diy project that isn't just printing.

Maglev linked in the BOM

Hardware needed:

  • Magnetic Levitation -kit
  • Superglue
  • Scissors

Software needed:

  • Wool filling

Instructions:

  1. Gather all your materials

    and

    2.  Insert the led and coil into the base

    3. Add the spacer ring

    4. Place the magnetic puck, tucking the excess wiring below

    5. Place the top part of the magnet housing. Align the grooves to that you dont pinch the wires.

    6. Take some cotton and ball it up. Glue to the shell, starting from the bottom going around the model.

I tried to go with roughly this kind of pattern. The ball sizes and specific placements should not be exact, it gives the cloud a more natural look.

    7. Once done, trim from the bottom to achieve a more “flush” bottom profile.

    8. Bring the pieces together and your done!

It can be done with some arduino, and programming. However I will look more into it to see if the model needs scaled to accommodate. I don't think so, but we'll see once I have it set to what I want weather monitor wise.

I find the magnetic levitation kit incredibly cool and have ordered one. Unfortunately, even after countless attempts, I cannot get the top part to levitate. It is always drawn to a corner of the base.

Hello! Just to make sure, you have connected the base to power with the supplied cable? Centreing the puck takes some practice, but i am sure you will get the hang of it if you do it slowly!

That's a common problem with the kit and kinda never really mentioned, Some time there not calibrated properly. There are 2 magnetic pentoninalometer that can be used to adjust the field. Basically Blue power adjusters in the corners that can be adjusted with a screwdriver, so you can adjust the field to balanced.
