Bio
Abrainium is a 3d design firm based out of Baltimore City. Focused on natural forms, we source geometry via 3d scanning from mushrooms, insects, plants, and animals. Lead designer, Kevin Mullin, spends much of his time outside appreciating the simple wonders of nature. A designer by necessity, he is versed in woodworking, ceramics, metalwork, fishing, tree felling, horticulture, and auto-restoration. All skills obtained growing up on a small farm in northern Maryland.

This model comes from a 3d scan of my dad. He is constantly disappointed in me so I made a mini version of him to be disappointed in my printer.

Is it possible to make 3d scanned data of Insects, Fungi, Plants, Animals, and Minerals into easily printable products? The short answer is yes. The gap between 3D scan and 3D print can be huge. The challenges associated in working with dense, hi-poly, noisy scan data require new workflows to reduce and form the data in the more rigid forms we find in 3d printing. But the resulting forms can be so gratifying... Follow for more new nature inspired design every week.

I made the first little hand 5 years ago at Towson University. Iteration one was the final piece in a five part series. Originally sculpted in wax and casted in solid silver with the Lost Wax cast process. This piece has constantly returned to my field of view as friends and customers as for more and more little hands.
