Description

I need a better photo, its more impressive in real life, taking a photo of LEDs is hard :-/

Demo, assembly and printing videos are at

Required parts

You need 2 of…

WS2812B ECO 8 x 32 Flexible matrix panel - MAKE SURE to select the right version, link defaults to 8x8

You need 1 of…

Athom WLED ESP32 controller - you don't need the IR Remote, just use your phone

Note there is a slot in the base for adding a zip tie to retain the incoming power cable.

Space is tight, but normal wire ferrules can be used into the Athom controller terminals and still clear the led panels on assembly.

Tap a M4 x 0.7 thread into the two mount holes in the base. Use a Socket Head Cap Screw M4x07 6mm to hold the controller onto the base.

Use at least 16 AWG for main 5V power in and out, then tie the 5v/GND out to the 5v/GND in parallel to all the 20 AWG wires built into the 2 panels.

You can be relatively generous on the wire lengths and tuck them in after assembly.

Putting the panels into the grid can be tricky. Use a few sheets of paper inserted into the grid cylinder, to allow you to first slide the panels into place. Ensure the verticals where the panels wrap around are aligned with each other AND the notch on the grid cylinder, so it will then sit at the back of the assembled lamp. Once you have things close, pull the paper out of the way, and do the final adjustment of LEDs into the grid.

Then insert the spring prints, one from the top and one from the bottom to retain the panels in place.

What's Ledfx? https://www.ledfx.app/

The lamp is great with just WLED, but really shines when driven by Ledfx

Design uses two output pins on the controller to get maximum FPS over the 512 pixels.

Remember to set up your 2d matrix configuration in WLED, these panels are vertical serpentine.

Use the interactive interface get things looking sane, then the Akemi effect to confirm everything is working as expected and right way up!

See images for example WLED configuration, your details may differ if you mount the panels upside down or run DOUT 1 and DOUT 2 swapped, but thats fine, sort it out in configuration

For LED & Hardware setup image note that the LED voltage is set to 5V efficient, and that the MAX current is set to 3000mA in this example.

That is max current over a standard USB charger for 5V. In the future I intend to add a base variant that houses the USB C plug and fast charge hardware directly and will support negotiation up to 5A with the right USB charger plug.

If you are running a more direct 5V supply, you can bump up to 5A directly and this will allow more full display brightness, but don't go higher, I worry about heat dissipation. ( If you must, then please print in ASA or similar for more temperature stability, tell me how it goes! )

For 2D Matrix configuration note the serpentine vertical config.

Also note you use the Y: Offset value if your panels are swapped, along with the top/left bottom/right configs accordingly. This is my working example, yours may be different. Play with it and use Akemi to assess sanity.

If you read this far, and you want to see more creations like this, then please, build one, and then consider buying me a coffee
