For something like the Button Magnet Tool Holder I designed for my pliers and snips (nippers?), I wanted the magnet to stick stronger to the wall panel than the tool. That way when I grab the tool, the magnet won't come off with it. For my design, I added a 0.6mm (0.2x3 layers) material thickness on the wall panel side of the magnet and on the tool side I offset the outer surface by >2.5mm. This extra distance reduces the magnetic pull just enough to still hold the tool firmly, but release the tool without dragging the magnet with it.
