The idea of crafting a complete dollhouse is enchanting. Each detail, from tiny furniture to intricate interior, can be meticulously designed and printed.

However, the reality of undertaking a project that spans over 250 hours is another story. Many enthusiasts express interest but often underestimate the level of commitment required. 

Imagine watching your printer work day after day, each layer slowly building toward a finished product. The initial excitement may fade as real challenges emerge—like troubleshooting mechanical issues or dealing with filament shortages.

Another notable achievement is the creation of a gazebo diorama, crafted at 1:6 scale. This ambitious venture required meticulous planning and countless hours (+150)  but resulted in a stunning scene that tells stories through its tiny streets.

 

Even larger projects have emerged, such as a modular camp wall for G I Joe like action figure that can be made into a complete camp scene.  A full print of this one took over 150 hrs to print also.

@jlsmith1105 I enjoy larger prints, and the assembly that comes with them. Its like printing a model which you then get to build. I always find it difficult to search for intricate models with lots of build plates. Like is there some kind of word to put in my search to find this kind of stuff. not necessarily doll house stuff, but like pirate ships or other cool stuff.

@Together3D There are some designs we create for others. But most of the designs are created for the designer themselves. For their household, family, friends. But other designs, are just to push themselves. I think this is a project that falls in that category. I think these kind of projects are stuff Makerworld tries to put into the crowdfunding projects, since it is a large project, takes a LOT of work, and only the dedicated will print it. But those who back/print it, will be amazed. And you as a designer, will have grown in your capabilities. it is one of those projects that even after a few years, you take as an example of what you've done with your designing time. It says: this is me, I have done this. And I am (rightfully) proud.

@Together3D @wilhelmus : wow that is a huge percentage you make for others! it is indeed a challange and more for yourself then for others. a flexi bunny that prints in 1 hour is juet more likely to get downloaded

@wilhelmus 95% i create for others, on demand, and indeed, if i look at older models i see a huge step forwards. The other side of the medallion is that while making more complex and bigger models, others who do not have the creative process in mind have more difficulties to print these because they do not know what to look for. So together with progress comes in a lot f cases more explanation that is necessary. I really like making stuff, but with large projects that don't seem to have an end to it print-wise i struggle to complete them. But when finished..... yo..what a rush.

@wilhelmus I looked at it and it might suite users that are not looking for a high end looking big print, it is over simplified. I also looked at you gazebo, it is in no comparison to mine either.

@jollypellican Great article. I've been taking on increasingly larger and more complex models, largely for the challenge of it. I recently finished Artifextron's arcade model which was fun and educational (for both the 3d printing and electronics components), as well as tpscheck's contest-winning shoe cabinet. I'm taking what I learned from both to create my own model of a Raspberry Pi-powered Jukebox. I've never designed something like this before and with a lot of trial and error and numerous reprints, I think (fingers crossed) I'm about done with printing. I say that... but let's see how final assembly goes :) I am finding that I need more internal braces, support at corners and edges etc. to deal with some of the structural integrity concerns you raise. I've also tried working in filaments like PA6-GF for structural stability, but the challenges inherent with these filaments hasn't been worth the effort for me (yet).

@user_3451370157 Interesting topic, but how to start? How to scale up? And where to cut and re-assemble? Would you do that all in the sliver?

@wilhelmus No i never cut anything in the slicer, if you do it in your design program you have more control. Up-scaling a ready model can be done in the slicer, but i rather don't do this there too. Mostly i design, and then make cut blocks in the program to cut the parts one by one. Lots of control that way.
