Description

Patreon : If you would like to support my work I now have a patreon here

UPDATE : I redesigned the sketch for the gasket as it didn't follow the goemetry properly

F3d files can fe found here :

I revamped the SnapLock storage boxes, transforming them into parametric Fusion 360 files. Additionally, I integrated a gasket for improved alignment between the two sides, and implemented a poka yoke mechanism to prevent incorrect mounting of the latches.

With the original model, I was surprised to notice that many people tend to assemble the latch backward, resulting in difficulty when opening it. In this new model, I've incorporated a small bump to prevent backward mounting entirely.

Disclaimer :

This is my first model using Fusion 360, I usually use Solidworks. Please be understanding if there are any mistakes in the model. Additionally, I have not set specific limits on the parameters but have provided minimum values in the comments. Should you attempt to go below these minimum values, the model may fail to reconstruct correctly, and I recommend restarting from the initial file.

Filaments used in the pictures : Link

  • FormFutura Refill PETG Light Grey
  • FormFutura Refill PETG Iron Grey

Size :

I have created two versions: a single-latch variant for smaller boxes and a dual-latch variant for larger ones.

Furthermore, I have shared the STEP files for both models.

How to modify the box :

  1. You need to have Fusion 360 downloaded
  2. Open one of the files and in the “MODIFY” menu choose “Change Parameters” as shown :

  3. A window pops up and you can modify the parameters in the “Favorites” section :
I added the minimum value for each parameter before the model breaks

  4. Export, print and enjoy !

Appreciation for the Author and Concern Regarding the License for the Model Dear Hugo and MakerWorld Administration, First of all, I would like to sincerely thank Hugo for his outstanding work. Your model is truly well-designed, carefully thought out, and technically sound. It is evident that a lot of time, knowledge, and effort went into its creation. Models like this serve as a source of inspiration, creativity, and useful modifications that benefit the entire community. However, I would like to express my concern regarding the licensing restrictions applied to this model, as they seem to contradict both its intended purpose and the fundamental principles of 3D printing. Key Issues Caused by the License Change: 1) The model is parametric, but the license prohibits derivative works. One of the greatest strengths of your work is its flexibility—the ability to adjust dimensions, geometry, and structure to fit various needs. This is the very purpose of parametric models. However, the restriction on "derivative works" makes it impossible to use the model as intended. 2) Before the license change, users on the platform had already created 152 remixes and derivative models. This clearly demonstrates that the community actively used your model as a base for customization and adaptation, proving its high demand and quality. However, after the license was changed, all of these works were suddenly put into question, and new users can no longer freely modify the model as originally intended. 3) The concept of the model cannot be protected by copyright. Copyright protects the specific expression of an idea, but not the idea itself. Storage boxes with snap-lock mechanisms have existed in various forms for a long time, and prohibiting derivative works effectively restricts not just copying the file, but also adapting the general design approach. 4) MakerWorld is interfering with the author’s license choice. From the author's comments, it is clear that the model was originally shared under an open license, which aligns with its parametric nature. However, MakerWorld offered participation in an "exclusive program," requiring a license change to a more restrictive one. This raises several concerns: - Does MakerWorld respect the principle of license freedom for creators? - Is it fair to impose restrictions retroactively, changing usage conditions that hundreds of users have already relied upon? - Why does MakerWorld require such strict terms for participation in its exclusive program, even for parametric models that are fundamentally meant to be customized and modified? - If MakerWorld truly supports the community and values the principles of 3D printing, a more reasonable approach would be to allow creators to choose their level of exclusivity instead of enforcing broad restrictions that contradict the very nature of parametric design. The licensing restrictions make it nearly impossible to use the model. Under the new license: - The digital file cannot be shared, even with friends. - The printed object cannot be given away, even for free. - No remixes or modifications are allowed. - The model cannot be used in any way if money is involved—even just covering material costs. As a result, a model that could have been immensely useful to the community is now effectively frozen in its current state. Request: To Hugo – Please consider reverting to an open license or adjusting the terms to allow users to continue adapting the model to their needs. To MakerWorld – Please reconsider the licensing terms for your exclusive programs, particularly for parametric models, as the current restrictions contradict the very principles of parametric design. Once again, I deeply appreciate the excellent work that went into this model. I hope this issue can be resolved in a way that benefits both the author and the 3D printing community as a whole. Sincerely, Dmitry

Hi Dmitry and thank you for your comment. I totally understand and agree with all your points. I've had many people DM me about the issue of remixes. When I first subscribed to the exclusive program, I didn’t realize how restrictive the license MakerWorld enforces would be. By the time I noticed, I was already locked in for three months with no way to exit early. Now, I’m torn between two things. On one hand, the few models I enrolled in the exclusive program (including this one) bring in a comfortable income, something I wouldn’t have been able to earn through licensing or Patreon. And at the same time, they remain free for everyone to enjoy, which is important to me. After all, I put a lot of effort into these models, and it feels good to be fairly compensated for that work. On the other hand, I really wish the license allowed remixing. One of the core ideas of the 3D printing community is to build upon each other's work to create new and improved designs. Ideally, there would be a license that permits remixes but keeps the model exclusive to MakerWorld in some way. When I created this box, it was just a side project. I made it for myself and didn’t expect it to blow up like it did. I uploaded the Fusion 360 files so people could customize the dimensions, and I was blown away to see over 150 remixes ! I never imagined it would be used and modified by so many people. I recognize the frustration for those who created remixes. Unfortunately, I didn’t anticipate this limitation when I joined the program, and I regret that it has impacted those works. I completely understand why people are upset, and I wish there were a way to allow those remixes to remain without conflicting with the current license restrictions. For now, I still can’t change the license since the three-month period isn’t over yet, and to be honest, I don’t know what I will do once that time is up. I just hope that by then, MakerWorld finds a solution that better balances creator compensation with community collaboration. Thanks again for your thoughtful message, I really appreciate the discussion around this issue. Hugo

Hi Hugo, I'm completely on your side in this situation, and honestly, it's amazing to witness a success story like yours—where even by sharing a model for free, a creator can earn enough for "coffee and printing materials." That’s truly awesome! However, here’s what concerns me: I come from the IT world, and this type of license originates from IT as well. But in my opinion, it’s completely unsuitable for licensing 3D models. There are several legal nuances in this license that just don’t make sense when applied to the world of 3D printing: The main restrictions: 1️⃣ You can’t share the digital file. ❌ You’re not allowed to send the model to anyone, upload it to other platforms, or even share it privately with friends. 2️⃣ You can’t distribute printed versions. ❌ Even if you print the model yourself, you cannot sell, gift, or give it away. 3️⃣ You can’t create derivative works. ❌ "Derivative works" include any modifications—remixes, altered versions, and possibly even parametric adjustments within predefined limits. 4️⃣ You can’t even improve the model for yourself and share it. 5️⃣ You can’t use the model for commercial purposes. ❌ You’re completely prohibited from earning anything with this model—whether by selling files or offering prints for sale. Even charging a friend for materials might be considered a violation! How does this align with the very nature of parametric models and public model sharing? In practice, if a user tweaks the parameters within the pre-defined constraints (e.g., making the box taller within a set range), this might not be considered a derivative work. However, if someone makes more significant modifications and creates a truly unique version, that could be a violation—even if they did it for themselves! For example, I have created a modification which makes the box not square, but half-circle (glasses case). But then I surprisingly discovered the license has changed and I have just violated it :) I really think that as a creator and participant in the exclusive program, you have the right to ask MakerWorld for clarification on how this license is supposed to work in real-life scenarios. Otherwise, this just seems absurd—the model is practically unusable under these restrictions. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Best, Dmitry

Hi Hugo, It looks like makerworld now allows you to remix only on makerworld and is actively taking action against makers that are using your model without a remix. Any chance you can change the license to allow remixes on Makerworld only?

Thank you for uploading the Fusion 360 files!! It made it EXTREAMLY easy to make the exact box I needed. Also, your file is very well thought out and I feel like I was able to learn a few things by examining your Fusion 360 timeline. Thank you again!!

excellent print file! easy to adjust size for first timer on pc. for those who don’t know there’s a hobbyist version of fusion 360 that’s free (don’t confuse with the 360 trial). if you get errors in fusion or weird circles click “compute all” in the bottom of the “modify” menu and that fixed everything (this should be added to the support docs!) I did a superfine 0.8mm layer height print after honing in my print settings. it hardly looks 3D printed at except if I could improve the model I’d round the big outer corners a bit more as the polygon edges were showing.

Hey, nice print ! You are right with the "compute all" trick, I will add it to the instuctions. I dont know if the corners are the polygon showing or artifacts of your printer moving too fast (I just checked and I have the same on my boxes) If it is the polygon count I have a trick : when you export as STL on fusion you have a pop up menu that let you choose the quality. You can tweak the sliders until the curves are smooth.

ah good tip with the polygons. I saw them in bambustudio model but it makes sense it was lowered by Fusion

Such a cool print! I designed one for my dji mini 3. It fits the controller, the drone and a lot of accessories underneath the drone, for example the other batterie, nd Filters or cables. I even made a harness for it so i can carry it arround more easily. 5 out of 5 model !!!

You can find the print file as a print profile right here, just look for a print file with the same photo as I posted in my comment. The straps are from an case of an old drone of mine so i guess it would be easier to buy any other strap, for example one for cameras? and the little "cage" out of straps around the box itself is handmade by my grandmother 🤗
