In 1926, British archaeologist Leonard Woolley excavated the Royal Tombs of Ur in ancient Mesopotamia — present-day Iraq. Among golden helmets, lyres, and royal burial offerings, he found a small wooden board inlaid with shell and lapis lazuli. It was a game. And it was already ancient.
