This is a remix of an excellent storage box model that appears to be derived from a popular Creative Commons artifact. I wanted to make this model more useful and had a bad time trying to source required hardware and print it in PLA for the color combinations I wanted, so I developed a remix. Features I like from the original model:
- TPU gasket seal
- Sturdy latches
- Optional handle
- Two widths - 180mm or 220
- Thick walls
I enjoyed the original model but had some difficulties with the print. Therefore I have made the below modifications:
- Modelled 3D printed pins and other required hardware: These will of course not be as strong as hardware, however they are useful as an option. I have tested and it is possible to make a working model using only printed parts, however I ended up opting for steel because I want these boxes to last years. Note that if you want to use stainless steel and don't have pins on hand, screws/bolts are sufficient in a pinch as opposed to buying pins.
- Adjusted hinge clearances: I found the hinge of the original model was prone to get stuck during opening, and could break the eyeholes. It is still worth filing/sanding the hinge area to ensure layer lines do not cause issues.
- Optimized to allow PLA and prevent warping: The original model and print profile was prone to warp at the corners of the lid and the box during printing in PLA. This caused structural defects and looked bad. I have added brim ears and made other adjustments to prevent this.
The original was intended to be printed in PETG, but this model will print ok in PLA.
Of course, for maximum strength and weatherproofing, PETG will be the best choice. You may consider printing the screws and latches only in PETG.
Note that the gasket seal is intended to print in TPU.
Let me know if you have any feedback or questions. Likes, boosts, etc. would also be nice =)
Many thanks to the model designer for sharing with us all!
