Profile Scribing Ruler

Another workshop tool that's been on my "I really need one of those..." list for a long time!

There are plenty of commercial profile scribers available, but I wanted something that was:

• Fully 3D printable
• Robust enough for everyday workshop use
• Easy to assemble
• Smooth and accurate to use
• Designed around commonly available hardware
• Flexible enough to build entirely from printed parts if preferred

After quite a few design iterations, this is the result, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Unlike many commercial versions, this design uses a rolling guide that follows the workpiece while the adjustable pointer accurately transfers the profile onto your material. 

Both versions accept a standard pencil up to 8 mm diameter.

I've included two bearing options:

🟢 Printable Bearing

• Completely 3D printed
• No additional hardware required
• Perfect if you want to print everything from the files provided

🔵 696-RS Steel Bearing

• 15 mm OD × 6 mm ID × 5 mm
• Rolls with lower friction
• Recommended for frequent workshop use

Both versions use exactly the same body, so you can swap between them whenever you like.

The body, pencil holder and locking hardware are all printable, including the thumbscrews and square nut, meaning the tool can be assembled with no metal fasteners whatsoever.
