Gort non è un semplice robot cinematografico, ma una vera e propria icona del potere silenzioso e inarrestabile.  Apparso per la prima volta nel capolavoro del 1951 Ultimatum alla Terra, si presenta come un colosso di metallo lucido, alto circa due metri e mezzo, privo di giunture visibili o tratti somatici umani.  Il suo design minimalista, quasi astratto, lo rende ancora più inquietante: una sentinella metallica che non batte ciglio e non comunica, se non attraverso l&#39;azione pura. La natura di Gort trascende quella di una semplice guardia del corpo per l&#39;alieno Klaatu.  Egli appartiene a una forza di polizia interstellare composta da robot indistruttibili, creati da una federazione di pianeti per garantire la pace universale.  La loro programmazione è drastica: hanno il compito di annientare qualsiasi civiltà che manifesti intenti bellicosi o aggressivi verso l&#39;esterno.  In questo senso, Gort non è &#34;buono&#34; o &#34;cattivo&#34;, ma agisce come un giudice imparziale e un esecutore automatico che non ammette appelli o negoziazioni umane. L&#39;arma principale di Gort risiede nella sua fessura oculare, protetta da una visiera mobile.  Quando questa si solleva, emette un raggio disintegratore capace di vaporizzare istantaneamente armi, carri armati e ostacoli senza alcuno sforzo apparente. La sua invulnerabilità è totale di fronte alle tecnologie terrestri dell&#39;epoca, rendendolo una minaccia assoluta che l&#39;esercito può solo osservare con impotente timore.  Nel remake del 2008, questa concezione viene aggiornata trasformandolo in una massa di nanorobot capaci di divorare ogni cosa sul loro cammino, ma l&#39;essenza del &#34;distruttore di mondi&#34; rimane la medesima. In the 2008 remake, this concept is updated by transforming him into a mass of nanobots capable of devouring everything in their path, but the essence of the &#34;world destroyer&#34; remains the same. Gort embodies the fear of the atomic age and the paradox of peace achieved through the threat of force.
