How to prepare a PLA 3D print for painting?
To make sure the paint sticks well and doesn't peel off while your child is playing, follow these simple steps:
- Cleaning: Remove any support remnants and wash the figure with water and dish soap to degrease the plastic. Make sure it is completely dry before moving to the next step.
- Applying Primer: Use a plastic spray primer (e.g., Rust-Oleum or BOLL). Swirl the can for a few minutes instead of shaking it to avoid bubbles. Apply 2–3 thin coats from a distance of about 20–25 cm in a well-ventilated area. Wait 15–20 minutes between each coat.
- Drying: Let the figure dry completely for about 40–60 minutes before giving it to the child.
- Painting: Once primed, the surface will perfectly bond with acrylic paints, which are kid-safe, provide great coverage, and are easy to clean off hands
