⚙️ Automatic Retracable Cable Organizer ⚙️

You are getting annoyed by cable “flying” around your home … that's what I was 😅

So, I designed this cable organizer … it's not only a normal one which you have to manually wind up, I wanted it simple and cool to use … it should just feel good everytime you use it.

Right now, it can only retract 1m cables, but I'll add support for 2m cables in the future :-)

What you need in addition to the printed parts?

1x metal spring measuring 0.3 × 7 × 2600 mm which you can buy for example here at eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/156342286034?var=457407944918)
1x any spring from a ballpoint pen should be fine ;-)

⚠️ Important Note

  1. Do print the hook plate BEFORE the case, ideally with PETG. On the case plate there is a stop integrated, where you can place the little ballpoint pen spring together with the hook inside
  2. During final assembly (see assembly instructions), remember that the flat spring stores a significant amount of force. Be cautious when pressing the release button—the mechanism will be under load
  3. Have fun at building ;-)

Hello Matthew, yes, I definetely got inspiration from your models! But as I found several things I didn't like too much, I designed my own version of it starting from scratch (your's very good tough, no question! I especially like the manual ones looking like a turbocharger, they are awesome 🤩) But as I started to create it, I quickly realized, there aren't too many options for a retraction mechanism fitting inside such a small case, especially with the hook and the spring ... so I used such a ratchet mechanism too. And I tried it with a 3d printed spring as well, but I couldn't get enough retraction with such a small spring in such a small room, so I needed a stronger one. First, I tried it with a one from a tape measure, it worked with a normal fabric cable in some cases, but that spring was in the one hand too weak and in the other too high 😅. After some orders here and there, too strong, too weak, I thought about the spring you used.

I’m really sorry if it looks like, I’ve used too much of your design, but I constructed it completely separately 🙈. I never wanted to do a copy or similar, just an own retractable cable organizer 🙈

It's okay, I don't mind that you were inspired. I know how challenging it is to make this design. And I know that my design is not perfect and yours looks more reliable and better :)

it's great but some parts are bigger than they should be and need a lot of sanding

Other Issues:The model was hard to put together. the sticks broke while trying to assemble and got stuck in the hole. it might need more clearance

Oh, okay, I'm sorry that happened. It didn't happen to me, so thank you for your feedback! I'm trying to fix the problem, reinforce the axis and add more clearance :-)

You might want to put the part about printing the small part first in the front or in the print profile description as I made the mistake and had to print again.

how in the world do you assemble the hook?

Hi, there should be a stop integrated at the second plate when slicing. There you can put the previously printed hook at the axis and then continue the print. I wrote it in the description too. Hope that helps

probably works, my printer just quit printing halfway through for some reason

Ok, that's weird ... is it the second plate with the actual case? Maybe because I integrated a stop there, so you can place the hook from the first place on the axis of the case. But that's on purpose and i tried to inform all about this through the model description and the print profile description. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

Hello DragonMaster, I'm really sorry to hear that. I mentioned it in the description that a metal spring as well as a normal ballpoint pen is needed for the organizer to work. What difficulties did happen to you on the assembly process? Maybe I can help you out

I did not see that ,so maybe my bad but instructions are not very good. That's all, the product looked fine. Also did not see where I should have installed any piece. Prior to completion, putting the spring in was very difficult. Getting it together was very difficult. No big deal.Chalk it up too learning experience

Can this retract cables up to 2 m? Does it work with both fabric and regular cables?
