Description

This model was designed using coffee, filament, and questionable life choices.

If it earned a spot on your printer, it might deserve a 👍 Like too. 😄

Desktop Trash Bin

I needed a small trash bin—one for my desktop and one next to my printers. I wasn’t exactly sure what size would work best, but I imagined something like the little bins you sometimes find on hotel tables.

While looking around, I found some nice models, but they either took forever to print or didn’t really fit my taste. I originally wanted an open design that could hold a bag. But after talking to friends and family—who all preferred closed bins for using at the breakfast table — I figured: why not also make one with a lid? My desktop bin could benefit from that too. It keeps things a bit more tucked away and looks cleaner sitting on the desk.

I’m not a fan of swivel lids since they limit what you can throw in. Hinged lids with handles felt overcomplicated, and I didn’t want to mess with push-to-open mechanisms (maybe for a future version).

I landed somewhere in between: a lid that rests on a small lip so it doesn’t fall in, and a back section you can press lightly to open it — no need to hit it dead-on. It’s just wide enough to drop in bigger bits without a struggle.

Originally, I made a simple inlay, but getting the bag in was tricky. Later on, I added a counter piece to help secure the bag more easily. The modular design also lets me match the colors with whatever I have on my desk, which is a nice bonus.

Parts

  • Container (Vase Mode)
  • Inlay
  • Inlay Counter
  • Cover (Open)
  • Cover for Lid
  • Lid

Sizes

  • 125mm x 125mm x 150mm
  • 100mm x 100mm x 120mm

Printing Tips

The main container is meant to be printed in vase mode — it’s fast and turns out clean.
The other parts can be printed normally.

  • Use a 0.4mm nozzle or larger
  • Enable vase mode
  • Set outer wall to 1mm (works fine with 0.4mm Nozzle)
  • Bottom layers: 6 (on .2mm layer height, so you get at least 1.2mm bottom surface height)
  • Sparse infill density: 0%

Tested on: A1 Mini, P1S, H2D.

Sidenote

I already handed out my early prototypes to the kids in my family. They were surprisingly excited and promised to keep their desks clean. We’ll see how that goes—but for now, they seem into it. 😅

Hello everyone, I'm a beginner I admire your design However, after printing, I found that the bottom lines may not have melted well and have holes I'd like to ask everyone what they think the problem is

Yikes, it looks like you had a layer shift around that area? If you check the left side, it seems to be moved outwards. That could probably lead to that it did nothing find to bond anymore on the right side. I cannot see it correctly; did you change the profile? Not sure if the wall is 1mm and it´s printed in vase mode - could be fine if i see the thick lines that missaligned above. Would try do print it again as it´s clearly in the beginning of the print. Watch if the lines are properly stacked and check if this layer shift is just a "not sure why it happened" problem.

This printed quite nicely, although to be honest, I'm still not sure what the other "LID" piece and inlay is for. I only needed the base, the lid and one inlay. I noticed the top of the other one has no holes, so maybe that's if you want it without a lid. Little unclear but the result is beautiful and functional.

The inserts are used to clamp a bag and hide it. Even if they are not used they provide a stronger grip for the top rim, to remove a little flex from the container.

I see. Can you tell me why it includes two Main Lids"? One with divits (for the lid), and one without? Is that if you want or do want a trash can lid?

Sure, one has holes for the lid, and one is intended to be used without lid and remain open. Please check the names 👍.

Neewbie here. Is it possible to make the walls on the container a bit thicker? If so, how? It keeps breaking in the top for me, and it feels very thin and fragile. I love the design though :)

Did you change the print profile? The outer wall should be 1mm thick, please check the printing instructions for the container and let me know if that was the problem.

I didn't change anything. In this moment i'm trying another filament to see if that maybe will fix the problem. I've measured the wall on the broken one, and its only 0,3 mm. I have no clue what's happened.

Please check the print settings, so that the outer wall clearly is set to 1mm. Otherwise you will get the flimsiness you described. You need to have at-least a .4mm nozzle.

Perfect to keep my desk clean. I also use dog poop bag and this is really easy to hide the fact that there is a neon green bag in it.

I printed out this bin because I realized while at my desk, trying to throw away a tissue, that I was missing a trash bin. I immediately found this, sized it up to 200% and started printing! Once I reached the lid, I ran out of white PLA. Since I'm new to printing, I didn't know what the proper procedure was in order to dry/refill new filament during a print, so my next best solution was to use the little black filament I had left. Well... That then ran out too LOL. So once again I chose the next filament in my AMS which was Red. Unintended effect, I now have a Pokeball trash bin xD!!! Thanks for the awesome model/print!
