Description

UPDATE: First accessory! Base to hold a brush and more stability!

Introduction

Hey there! 3D printing introduced me to the wonderful (and time consuming, lol) world of miniatures and mini painting, and as a complete novice with no tools, I decided to design and print my own handle to make painting easier.

The tool works with a simple threaded mechanism that allows you to change the holder diameter from 25 to 54 mm. This is pretty handy as miniature have all sorts of base diameters, and contrary to other grips with sequential sections, this tool maximises the exposed section of the mini for ease of painting while keeping a very strong grip.

Modularity

The project is purposefully modular and allows for complete disassembly. You can design your own tassels to fit bigger bases or bases with different shapes, or maybe purpose fit holders for miniatures without bases. The tassels use an M10 thread, in particular it is a M10x1.25 extruded on a hole diameter of 11mm, with one tassel being left handed and the other right handed.

I'll be sure to update the project with other components if the need arises, be sure to let me know in comments if you have suggestions.

Printing and assembly

The holder is printed with a .4 mm nozzle, ensuring the functionality of the threads. I've found during prototyping that PLA works well, but I printed the final version in PETG-CF with standard settings and I'm extremely happy with it.

The featured print profile has a modifier on the handle to make it bottom heavy. This is highly recommended but of course optional, feel free to remove it to save on filament.

The assembly guide is provided in the documentation!

Conclusion

I hope you like this one as much as I enjoyed designing it. Shameless plug here, but that second dragon miniature is made by me! Check it out here if you like it, and I'd be incredibly grateful if you considered boosting. Have fun!

One of the two threaded inserts proved somewhat difficult to install; inserting the second was considerably more challenging. Once installed, however, it functions flawlessly. Thank you

How small of a base are you trying to use with the handle? The smallest I can go is 25mm. See my photo showing an official 25mm base with my Clanrat, I’m able to hold it by the model, suspended in air.

I love this design. any chance of a remix for standard sized minis and possibly flat clamps for terrain.

I admittedly mostly paint 32mm scale, and this does the job. More clamps are definitely coming though, I made the design modular exactly for this!

I like that you thought about a modular design. Having bigger clamps would be great indeed.

Thanks a lot for the boosts! More stuff is coming in a week or two, since right now I'm a bit swamped with uni work :D

A minor weakness in the axis required me to reprint it, but otherwise a very beautiful and practical object
