F-100 Super Sabre

Overview:
The F-100 Super Sabre was the first U.S. Air Force fighter capable of sustained supersonic flight in level flight. Developed by North American Aviation, it served as the cornerstone of the Air Force’s fighter force in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Development History:
Derived from the F-86 Sabre, the F-100 featured a more powerful Pratt & Whitney J57 engine and an advanced afterburner. Its introduction in 1954 was troubled by stability issues, requiring modifications to improve safety and performance.

Historical Significance:
Nicknamed the “Hun,” the F-100 was extensively used during the Vietnam War for ground-attack missions. It marked the transition to the supersonic jet era and laid the groundwork for later "Century Series" fighters.

Factoids:

• First fighter to exceed Mach 1 in level flight.
• Flown by the Thunderbirds aerobatic team from 1956 to 1964.
