Design choices
When I thought about designing this, I took into consideration a few aspects:
- match decor-wise to the designated space it will be placed in,
- be multi-color, but without a huge waste of filament considering its size,
- allow for proper drainage and avoid rotting roots,
- have a matching water tray.
So, having all this in mind, I decided to create a two-part model, a pot with additional cover that doubles as water tray, but also looks pretty. The pot is elevated by 3mm inside the cover to allow proper drainage, and cover's bottom part is also higher on the outside to make sure water doesn't spill from the bottom (assuming normal watering and not trying to drown the plant… 😂).
This model has been designed with 0.5mm clearance in mind for fitting the pot inside the cover, meaning the pot is in total ≤1mm smaller than the inner diameter of the cover. This allows for a comfortable fit, and the seam is not interfering in any way. If your printer requires bigger clearance you may need to slightly scale down the pot in X and Y directions (e.g. 99%), keeping Z the same to match the cover's height properly. I tested it initially with 0.2mm clearance, and it was a little too tight for an effortless sliding in/out, so I decided to use 0.5mm instead - it made a huge difference for me.
I used Sunlu PLA+ in Grey and White filaments for my planters.
If you'd like to have a different size of this planter, please let me know. I might be able to help you and provide an updated design with this specific size. You may also scale up/down both models by the same percent, but it may cause issues with cover's water tray part to be too high (and ugly) or not high enough (and cause leakage).

Print guide
- Size described in print profile name describes the outer diameter of the cover, not the inside of the pot
- Both parts of the model print without supports
- Precise Z height is enabled
- When using OrcaSlicer, enable Precise wall option as well
- Cover plate uses a Variable/Adaptive Layer Height for best results, quality vs speed
- Feel free to adjust those settings to match your needs
