The Aircraft
PBY Catalina
The Consolidated PBY Catalina, introduced in 1936, was one of the most versatile and successful flying boats of its time, serving as a lifeline for Allied forces during WWII. Originally designed for long-range patrol and reconnaissance missions, the Catalina quickly proved its value in anti-submarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, and convoy escort duties. One of its most notable contributions was during the Battle of Midway, when Catalinas spotted the approaching Japanese fleet, providing critical intelligence that shaped the outcome of the battle. The aircraft's ability to land on water made it invaluable for rescuing downed pilots, earning it a legendary reputation among servicemen. After the war, Catalinas transitioned into civilian roles such as firefighting, cargo transport, and exploration, with some still in use today. Over 3,300 were built, featuring a wingspan of 104 feet, a cruise speed of 125 knots, and a remarkable range of 2,520 nautical miles. The Catalina’s rugged design and adaptability secured its place as one of aviation's great workhorses.
The Model
This was a fun model to design and play with. You can have the wingtips down or up, and like my others, the props spin and controls are positionable. Enjoy a model of one of the coolest airplanes around!
